A Letter To Whom It Concerns
Damn. How do I explain my first senior semester in creative writing? Well, from day one I knew this semester was going to be something different. We played with play-doh! Before I knew it, I made new friends... we became a family. One huge inside joke that only we could understand. This class is truly inspirational and something I will never forget. I learned an immense amount. I learned who Sandra Cisnero is and that she likes to travel. I learned what a vignette means. I learned that having a "manifestation board" is actually mega helpful. I learned what my name means in Ireland. I learned how normal I am not. I learned how to write from the perspective of a drop of water. I learned what the 'Pixar Storytelling Formula' is. I learned that no one can agree on what number SWAT we were on. I learned what SWAT stood for. I learned how immensely talented people can be when you sit them down and make them write creatively. I learned that Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice" is too short to be taken seriously when it comes to reciting poetry. I learned that Robert Frost is NOT Ms. Frost's favorite poet. I learned the words "bildungsroman" and "juxtaposition." I learned that there was such a thing as a National Day on Writing. And how to write a six-word memoir and what blackout poetry is. I learned what the term, "Shake the Dust" means. I learned that Anis Mojgani and Shane Koyczan are fantastic speakers. I learned how to properly pronounce Anis's name. I learned just how much I hate the song "Red Solo Cup." I learned that I love the song "Scars" by Papa Roach. I learned how difficult it is to write a poem about colors that are named "Exotic Chinese Coral" and "Exalted Purple Majesty." I learned to be even more grateful for what I have rather than complain about what I don't. I learned how to ignore that inner critic. I learned this semester that we are loved and cared for. Furthermore, how to always "Stay Gold."
Thanks, Frost. For teaching me.
